Homework

All children in Room 4 are expected to do homework on a regular basis.

We believe that homework sets a positive learning habit and helps to reinforce and extend the learning that happens within our classroom.

It is important that homework is a positive experience for you and your child and therefore we recommend that parents\caregivers support their child to find the best time and space to do it.

We understand that all children learn differently and all families have a variety of commitments.  Therefore our homework is designed to be able to be done independently by your child if need be.  They can do it anytime throughout the week so they learn to manage their time around other commitments. The idea is for them to have written it out 4 x by the end of the week.  For example:  Monday night may be Netball practice, so they can do their “Monday night” homework on Tuesday, as well as Tuesday’s.  They are still writing it out and learning it 4x regardless of when they do it.

There is no need to sign, we can see whether they have completed it or not J

We are available to talk through any issues that can occur during homework time and can support you with ideas for making this easier.

Homework each night

Reading – 10 to 15mins

  • Reading text either provided by us or chosen by your child

  • If possible,  listen to them read or ask them questions after they have read silently to themselves

    • You could ask

      • What happens in the story?

      • Who are the characters?  What are they like?

      • Where is it set?

      • What are 5 facts you learnt?

      • What is your favourite part?  Why?

Maths – 10 mins

  • Students write their equations out

  • If possible, test your child by asking them to call out the answer, by saying the whole equation, e.g. 5 x 6 =?, answered by saying “Five times six is thirty.”

  • Please try to put the questions in a different order each day.

  • You can ask them the family facts for that fact eg: 6 x 5, 30 ¸ 6, 30 ¸ 5

Spelling – 5mins

  • Students write their words out on their own

    • They can write it more times on a scrap piece of paper

    • Get them to Cover up their attempt and spell it out loud

    • Look to see if they got it correct

  • Note words such as ‘their’ and ‘there’ will need to be put into a sentence when called out so your child knows which one they are spelling.

Note: Homework will be done on a Friday. So all books need to be back at school on Friday
